Superintendent of Police (SP), Shekhar Koirala, who was also the chief of District Police Office (DPO) Banke has been suspended on the charge of taking bribe. Upon the recommendation of the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA), Nepal Police headquarters suspended SP Koirala. Earlier on February 6, a CIAA team had caught red handed with Rs 25,000 a team of the police personnel led by Sub Inspector Suman Kharel. The security personnel were deployed by the Banke DPO for criminal investigation. Following the incident, when the CIAA team tried to take Sub Inspector Kharel into custody, there was a quarrel for about three hours and some CIAA officials were injured. However, the quarrel ended after intervention by CIAA chief commissioner Lokman Singh Karki and Inspector General of Police (IGP) Upendra Kant Aryal. The CIAA had alleged that Koirala, the then SP of DPO Banke, did not taken any step to resolve the dispute between the DPO and the CIAA team. The CIAA´s investigation later found the involvement of SP Koirala in the corruption case, according to the CIAA. It was revealed that Sub-inspector Kharel had taken bribe of Rs 25,000 from Yuwaraj Singh, elder brother of Yudhir Singh, who was in police custody on charge of theft. Other six police officials were suspended on the charge.
