Nepal Police on Monday arrested a British tourist on the charge of illegally participating in the sit-in launched by the Federal Alliance while picketing Singha Durbar on Monday. The arrested has been identified as Martin Benjamin Travers, a man in his early forties, holding passport number 512793532. An artist by profession, Travers had arrived in Nepal on March 9 this year on a three-month tourist visa. According to SP Pradhumna Karki, spokesperson at the Metropolitan Police Range Office, Kathmandu, who is also the commander-in-charge of the police forces looking after the security of Singha Durbar during the picketing, Travers was involved in sit-in protest with a placard that read Magrat Autonomous Region. Kathmandu's chief district officer (CDO) Ram Krishna Subedi said that the activities of the British tourist were against Nepal's constitution and against the laws related to immigration. "As per the Immigration Act, no foreigner holding tourist visa shall be entitled to participate in any political programs," CDO Subedi told Republica. He received the visa as a tourist and acted like a political activist that contradicts the prevailing laws, he added. During preliminary investigation, Travers has reportedly claimed that he participated in the protest program without any political motives. The Ministry of Home Affairs has informed that it is also investigating other tourists participating in the protest programs with the support of visuals and still photos recorded by the security forces. After Sunday's picketing, there was a massive buzz on social media with photos of foreigners participating in the protest with the locals urging action against such tourists. Home ministry spokesperson Yadav Koirala said, "We will take stern action against such activities by foreigners if they are found guilty." Federal alliance to shift protest epicentre to Baluwatar The agitating Federal Alliance, an alliance of ethnic and Madhesi parties, has decided to shift the protest programs to Baluwatar, near the prime minister's official residence, starting from Tuesday. A meeting of the alliance, comprising 29 political parties, took the decision to this effect on Monday, according to Sadhbhawana Party's General Secretary Manish Suman. "It's a slight change in the structure and venue of the Kathmandu-centric protest," he said. The alliance, issuing a press statement, said that it is now ready to exert pressure directly on the executive head of the government -- Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli. Meanwhile, PM Oli addressing a program in the capital said that the government would not tolerate obstruction of transportation as a part of the protest programs. "The government is ready to address all the demands through talks under legal and constitutional frames but we are not going to allow vehicular or transportation obstruction," said the prime minister. Similarly, two protestors were injured and a man was arrested during the picketing of Singha Durbar on Monday. Police also said they seized 35 batons hidden near Thapathali area. According to the police, 23-year-old Ram Prasad Paudel of Arghakhachi was manhandled by the protestors alleging him of being a vigilante. Paudel sustained injuries in his eyes. The alliance has urged the government to fulfil the 26-point demand that includes redrawing provincial boundaries and amending some provisions of the new constitution.
