2016-05-17

Bagmati, Kathmandu, Kathmandu

As the protest staged by Sanghiya Gathabandha, an alliance of Madhesi and Janajati parties enters the third day in the Capital on Monday, the cadres affiliated to the alliance have beaten up two students accusing them of being vigilantes. Prakash Adhikari and Ram Prasad Poudel, both from Argakhanchi district, were attacked and seriously injured. Poudel has sustained a severe eye injury while his friend Adhikari received beatings. Poudel was taken to Annapurna Neuro Hospital for immediate treatment from where he was referred to Tilganga Hospital for having severe eye damage. Adhikari and Poudel live in a rented apartment in Maitidevi. Adhikari is studying Bachelor in Science in Tri Chandra Campus while Poudel is a master’s level student at Shankar Dev Campus. According to Adhikari, they were moving past the protesters looking for a hostel. “All of a sudden the protesters pounced upon us and rained batons, blows and helmet while we were walking on the footpath,” said Adhikari. But media reports have quoted the demonstrators claim that the duo was policemen. The alliance’s leaders claimed that vigilantes infiltrated into the protesters and hurled stones at security personnel to incite violence. The alliance is staging a demonstration at Maitighar Mandala in the Capital demanding constitution amendment to reflect their aspirations. The move comes after around three months of the end of border-centric protests with an aim to build pressure without creating undue public hardship.
