Elderly man publicly humiliated after son marry's girl of so called upper caste

[Updated] A 64-year-old elderly man from Bhawanipur in Birgunj municipality-21 has reportedly been publicly humiliated by the locals of the village after his son married a girl of so-called upper caste. On Wednesday, locals of the village put a garland of shoes around Shivapujan Shah Teli's neck and paraded him around the village. The locals of the so-called upper caste were angered after Shivapujan's youngest son Arjun married Rajesh Patel's daughter Rabina Kumari by eloping on June 15. The two were reportedly in a love affair. After the incident, locals of the village held a meeting in which they decided that they would punish Shivapujan by publicly humiliating him for his son's act of daring to marry a girl of upper caste. Shivapujan's other son Nanakchand Shah Teli said that his father was also beaten while he was being paraded around the village.

Political pressure exerted on releasing arrestees Political pressure has been exerted in Birgunj to release the accused Shiva Shankar Patel, Brhamha Dev Patel and guard Surendra Paswan of Bhawanipur who was arrested by police on the charge of putting shoe garland on Shiva Pujan Shah,64 of Birgunj sub-metropolish-21, Bhawanipur on June 23. The victim was misbehaved on June 22 on the charge of letting his son do inter-caste marriage. Nepali congress of Parsa is giving tremendous pressure to the administration to release those accused. His son Arjun Shah had married an inter-caste woman Rabina Kumari Patel of the same place. Shivapujan was misbehaved by putting shoe garland by the accused. Nepali congress of Parsa has pressurised CDO Keshav Raj Ghimire by presenting memorandum on June 24 to release those accused. Former district secretary of congress, Ashok Jaiswal said that the administration was pressurised to release them because they were arrested without registration of complaint. Various political party’s leaders went to the administration for their release however DSP Homendra Bogati of DPO said that the accused cannot be released on pressure because their behaviour was inhumane.

Parsa District Administration Office (DAO) has released three persons who were arrested last week for parading a 64-year-old man from Bhawanipur VDC with a shoe garland around his neck after his son eloped with a girl from the so-called upper caste family. Chief District Officer (CDO) Keshav Raj Ghimire, who stepped in to adjudicate the case on Tuesday evening, released Shiva Shankar Patel, Bramhadev Patel, and Surendra Paswan on bail. Shiva Shankar is a former chairman of Bhawanipur VDC. Police had booked the three men for a public offence, though they had committed a caste discrimination crime. CDO Ghimire said that considering the seriousness of the crime, the perpetrators were ordered to pay the bail of Rs 5,000 each which is higher than the standard bail amount for public offence crimes. Some law practitioners in the district said the trio had committed a hate crime and they were let off easily. It is learnt that some local politicians had influenced the case. On Friday, a delegation of local political parties had reached the DAO and pressed for an early release of the three men. Superintendent of Police Rajababu Shreshta said the perpetrators were granted early release because they were old and infirm.
