2013-03-17

Direct report: Occupy Baluwater demonstrators were arrested outside the Prime ministers residence while protesting the governments continued failure to implement the sentence against Balkrishna Dhungel. -------------- KATHMANDU: Tension rang high in front of Prime Minister’s official residence in Baluwatar on Sunday morning after the UCPN-Maoist’s cadres “thwart” the protest staged by the Occupy Baluwatar protesters demanding action on murder-convict Bal Krishna Dhungel. “Maoist cadres tore the pamphlets glued on the walls and also staged counter protest demanding security to the former lawmaker Dhungel,” informed one of the Occupy Baluwatar campaigner to THT Online. Police also detained dozens of Occupy Baluwatar campaigners, a voluntary protest joined in by rights activists. One of the UCPN-Maoist leader involved in the protest said that they were forced to stage protest because the campaigners have put on false accusation over Dhungel. Issuing a press statement UCPN-Maoist's Newa and Kirat state committees on Friday had condemned the campaign as “anti-people act” and warned of stern action. Despite the warning, the campaigners continued their protest on Saturday. Though the Supreme Court had convicted former Constituency Assembly member Dhungel in the murder of Ujjan Shrestha of Okhaldhunga, the government and law enforcement agencies have ignored to arrest him.
