Rescue of 'child bride' from wedding pavilion in Sankhuwasbha

A 14-year-old girl has been rescued from the wedding hall. While marrying Ramesh Gurung, 32, of Khandbari-3, officials of the District Children's Club Network rescued the girl from the marriage hall and handed her over to the police. According to the rescue workers, the victim's father remarried without any contact and while the mother was in Malaysia for foreign employment, the grandmother was forced to marry the girl. Mewahang Rai, chairman of the district children's club network, and Salu Chauhan, a member of the district, said that the girl was rescued after they lodged a complaint with the police. Chairman of the District Children's Club Network, Khewahang Rai, said that they had to work for the rescue of the child victims as they were marrying against the Convention on the Rights of the Child, 1989, Constitution of Nepal, Children Act, 2048 BS and Children's Rules, 2051 BS. Police said that they were preparing to register a case against the accused at the palace for unmarried marriage and child marriage. Shailu Chauhan, a member of the network, said that she had lodged a complaint with the police as the main initiative for child protection was to reduce child marriage.
