2016-12-05

Lumbini, Pyuthan, Mallarani

Residents of Pyuthan district staged demonstration on Monday demanding undivided province no. 5. The recent constitution amendment bill registered by government at the Legislature-Parliament proposes splitting Tarai and hill districts in province 5. A Joint Struggle Committee-Pyuthan enforced a symbolic shutdown in Pyuthan from 1 to 3pm on Monday and organised an assembly. Representatives of political parties, Pyuthan Chamber of Commerce and Industries, Federation of Non Government Agencies, among other, addressed the assembly. Speakers noted that the amendment was proposed against people's spirit. Nepali Congress district secretary Devendra Barma said that although his party is coalition partner in government, he took part in the protest because the amendment was against the interest of people. CPN (Maoist Centre) district joint-coordinator Krishna Adhikari said that they would further strengthen the protest. Rastriya Janamorcha's Pyuthan Chairman Krishna Khadka opined that there would be grave consequences if the government does not pay heed to the peaceful protests being held now. Khadka accused that the amendment bill was drafted under India’s influence. Another CPN-UML leader Tusliram Sharma said that since ministers, Madhesi Morcha, and leaders of government parties have expressed dissatisfaction with the amendment proposal, this is a clear indication of India's intervention. The struggle committee has not organised any vehicular strike in the district due to local festival.
