Court Slaps 6-month Sentence in Domestic Violence Case

Banke/July 17 The District Court of Banke has slapped 6-month jail sentence and 25,000 rupees fine to Sabir Ali Halwai of Kasaimandi in Nepalgunj Municipality-6 deciding over a case of domestic violence. Convicting Sabir Ali of the charge, District Judge Shekhar Prasad Paudel also ordered to extract 75,000 rupees compensation from the perpetrator to the victim. The verdict was given according to the Domestic Violence Act. According to Poonam Pandey, who had pleaded from the victim's side, said that the verdict was first of its kind in the district court where a maximum punishment had been given in the case of domestic violence. Tarannum Banno Halbai, wife of Sabir Ali had filed a complaint at the District Police Office against him on December 24, 2012. She accused her husband of biting in her cheek, chest and beating her. She added that he had been regularly inflicting physical injuries upon her. She had been staying at her maternal home with her two sons.
