Women's Sit-In to Protest Police Refusal to File Complaint

Saptari/July 21 Nearly 100 women of Hariharpur VDC and Prasawani VDC have staged a sit-in in front of the District Police Office on July 21 after the police refused to register a complaint of girl trafficking attempt. The women had filed a complaint against Draupati Devi Chaudhary, 39, of Hariharpur VDC-2, Mukesh Khadka, 31, ofPrasawai Phattepur VDC-3 and Mithilesh Yadav, 27, of Bathnaha VDC-2. It is alleged that the accused tried to take two girls, aged 16 and 17, one each from Hariharpur VDC-2 and Praswani VDC-3 to India in the pretext of taking them for participation in a training in Kachanapur, Saptari on July 6 but were actually taken to Itahari of Sunsari. The accused Mukesh and Mithilesh had traveled with them to Itahari where the girls were told to act in public as if they did not know the men. The girls were also promised Rs 25,000 each for going to bed with the men but when the girls refused, they were threatened and kept in the hotel rooms. In the evening, the girls heard Draupati discussion the sale of the girls in India prompting them to escape. The girls said that they ran away from the hotel at around 10 pm and was rescued by a local Balram Gupta of Itahari Municipality-5. They returned home on July 7. Manohar Kumar Pokharel
