Rs 500,000 For Family of Man Who Died in Police Custody

Tanahun/August 4 The government has provided Rs 500,000 to the kins of Sujan Tamang, 22, of Pokharibhanjyang VDC-4 who died in the police custody on March 28. CDO Shankar Prasad Kharel handed over the money to Tamang’s wife Priti on August 4. The Council of Ministers had decided to provide him the money a few days ago. Though the local authority had agreed to provide Rs 1.5m, the government only allocated Rs 500,000. CDO Kharel said that no one should be complaining as the government provided money as per the policy. Santa Tamang, the head of a struggle committee formed by locals to ensure compensation to Tamang’s family, expressed gratitude to the government for providing the money. The committee had even met with Home Minister Madhav Ghimire seeking justice to the deceased’s family. Sujan died in the police custody after being taken into custody by the police at Bhadgaon of Byas Municipality-1. The police claimed that he died after falling off the cliff while fleeing from the police as they were taking him to Damauli Hospital while his family claimed he died due to police torture. Praka
