BIRGUNJ, SEP 23 - Police arrested Rabindra Patel aka Chauhan Singh, military commander of the Goit faction of Janatantrik Tarai Mukti Morcha, an armed Tarai outfit, from an area near Birgunj Dry Port in the district on Saturday. Patel was made public amid a press meet on Sunday. Senior Superintendent of Police Sarvendra Khanal said Patel was arrested while he was entering Nepal from the bordering Indian town of Raxaul. Khanal said Patel was arrested as part of a police campaign to arrest members of various armed groups which are making plans to foil the Constituent Assembly election slated for November 19. Patel, a permanent resident of Lipanibirta-8 in Parsa, is the most wanted man in police’s list for his alleged involvement in various criminal activities, including murder, abduction and extortion. He has been accused of murdering two people, including Mohan Mainali, the then administrative officer of the Parsa District Administration Office. He is also accused of threatening to kill an officer at the Birgunj-based Consulate General of India in an extortion bid. A police source said Patel made Raxaul and Chhaudadano as his safe haven and carried out his criminal activities. The source said he could not be arrested earlier as some Madhes-based leaders protected him. Meanwhile, Dhanusha police made public Shyam Yadav, the politburo member of the Jaikrishna Goit-led Akhil Janatantrik Tarai Mukti Morcha, amid a press meet on Sunday. Yadav, a resident of Laxmipur Bagewa, was arrested from bordering Nagarain-9 on Saturday. Police said Yadav was involved in a number of criminal activities.
