The Kakadvitta office of Maiti Nepal has rescued as many as 174 women from human traffickers in the last six months. The women were being trafficked to India to be sold in brothels there. Maiti Nepal brought the women back and provided them counselling. As per Maiti Nepal’s eastern region office, Kakadvitta, they were handed over to their parents. Ten among the 174 women were rescued from Siligudi, Delhi, Khoribari, among other cities in India, it is stated. Maiti Nepal, a non-governmental organisation working to rescue and rehabilitate trafficked women, has been maintaining regular surveillance at Kakadvitta, Pashupatinagar and Bhadrapur and Jogbani, the places considered as transit points for human trafficking. Eighty-six cases of missing women were registered at Maiti Nepal’s eastern region office between January and June this year. Thirty of those women have already been found, said coordinator of Maiti Nepal’s eastern region office GovindaGhimire. During the period, Maiti Nepal registered three cases under human trafficking and two under domestic violence at the court. Meanwhile, Maiti Nepal has prevented 195 women from crossing the border to India through Pashupatinagar transit point in the last six months and had rescued 18 women from the traffickers. Sixty-three missing complaints have been registered in Pashupatinagar, out of which 22 women have already been found. Likewise, Maiti Nepal has stopped 120 women from crossing through Jogbani transit point in Morang district while four other women have been rescued. Maiti Nepal stated that thirty-five applications of missing women were registered and 14 have been found. Maiti Nepal has been conducting various awareness-raising programmes in partnership with Nepal Police to prevent human trafficking.
