Protect People, Not Criminals: INSEC

2012-01-27

Kathmandu/ January 27

Informal Sector Service Centre (INSEC) has demanded the government that it respects legal system of the country by discouraging crimes.

Issuing a press release in connection with the government's move to withdraw cases involving some 24 individuals charged with different crimes on January 27, INSEC chairperson Subodh Raj Pyakurel said that government's move to give amnesty to the accused has made people's aspirations to establish democracy meaningless.

"Our serious concern has been drawn towards the news reports on the government's proposal to withdraw cases involving some 24 individuals charged with different crimes as part of an the agreement among the coalition partners," the release said, adding that there is a general practice of withdrawing cases of political nature, however, among those persons whose cases have been recommended for withdrawal, several of them have been charged with theft, abduction and robbery while the court has also issued arrest warrants in their names.

"There will be no need of judicial body and criminal code in the country if we go on giving amnesty to the accused by politicizing crime; the nation will convert into anarchy where there is no need of rule of law, the release said, "Is the incumbent government formed to protect the general public or the criminals? Is the government accountable to the people or the criminals? These are the concerns of Nepalis who believe in democracy, human rights and peace."
