Kailali District Court hands down life sentence to Resham Chaudhary

Kailali District Court on Wednesday handed down a life sentence to Resham Chaudhary, a lawmaker from the Rastriya Janata Party-Nepal, in connection with the 2015 Kailali incident.

A single bench of District Judge Parshuram Bhattarai passed the judgment after a week-long hearing.

The court has also sent 10 others to life in prison while Laxman Chaudhary and Lahuram Chaudhary among 12 others have been slapped with three years in jail each. Three persons have been acquitted.

At least nine people, including a child and a senior police officer, were killed in the protest in the run-up to the promulgation of the constitution in September 2015.


Chaudhary, who was on the run, however, had won the 2017 elections from Kailali-1 on the Rastriya Janata Party-Nepal ticket.

He was sworn in as a lawmaker on January 3. He is currently doing time in Dilli Bazaar Prison in Kathmandu.

After being convicted, Chaudhary now will lose his post of Member of Parliament.

Article 89 (b) of the constitution says the seat of a member of the federal Parliament shall become vacant “if he or she is no longer qualified or ceases to possess the qualification under Article 87.

Article 87 (1) (c) says a person shall be qualified to become a member of the federal Parliament is he or she does has not been convicted of a criminal offense involving moral turpitude.
