Twelve Nepali women being trafficked to various Gulf countries have been rescued from New Delhi in India.

A joint team of New Delhi Women Commission, Nepali embassy in New Delhi and KI Nepal raided two places in Bihar and rescued them on Saturday night. Eight of the women were rescued from a room in Qutub Vihar while others from Shyam Vihar where the women were kept captive by the traffickers. Both places are located on the outskirts of Delhi.

The rescued women, in their statement to the police, said that they were brought to Delhi on a bus one week ago via Nepalgunj, Sunauli and Kakarbhitta borders. The rescued women are from Jhapa, Dang, Dhading, Makwanpur, Rasuwa, Kailali and Pyuthan districts.

The women, aged between 22 years to 42 years, were lured on the pretext of lucrative jobs in Kuwait, Iraq and Dubai by one Uday Rana, one of the traffickers. They had also handed over their passports and submitted anywhere between Rs 20,000 to Rs 200,000 to Rana.

Police said that the traffickers had planned to take them to their destination countries via New Delhi or Myanmar.

In the first week of February, 179 women being trafficked to various Gulf countries via Myanmar were rescued from various parts in Manipur, a northeastern state of India. The rescue of women on Saturday showed the route was still being used by traffickers.

The rescued women will return to Nepal after completion of necessary legal procedures, informed KI Nepal New Delhi representative Nabin Singh. An FIR has been filed against Rana at Chhawla Police Station in New Delhi .
