A dispute between two groups on Friday at Pulchowk, Lalitpur, turned nasty and resulted in the death of a 20-year-old youth.

The youth, identified as Ansal Shakya, died while undergoing treatment for the injuries he had sustained.

According to the Metropolitan Police Range, Lalitpur, the dispute occurred at around 6:30 pm at an alley.

Shakya was rushed to the nearby Sumeru City Hospital for treatment at 6:45 pm. The hospital pronounced Shakya dead at 7 pm, police said.

“Shakya had sustained deep cuts from a sharp weapon on his chest and back,” Deputy Superintendent of Police Narayan Prasad Chimoriya, spokesperson for the range, told the Post.

Around 12-14 people were involved in the fight, police quoted eyewitnesses as reporting.

“A team from the range had reached the scene as soon as the public informed us about the incident,” said Chimoriya. “But everyone had fled and Shakya had already been rushed to the hospital by locals. Friends of Shakya were not present at the hospital when a team of the Metropolitan Police Sector, Pulchowk, reached the scene.”

Chimoriya said police had immediately intensified the search to find those involved in the fight and arrested 10 individuals in two hours.

Preliminary investigation has shown that a dispute had arisen over two youths— Abhishek Shahi and Krishna Tamang—over a girl.

Police said the two youths had agreed to meet at the alley, and when they came, they came with their own set of friends. A dispute then arose, followed by a fist fight, during which Shakya, a friend of Shahi, got attacked by a sharp weapon.

“We have already arrested Shahi, Tamang and eight others involved in the fight. The arrested individuals have also sustained minor injuries in different parts of their body,” said Chimoriya.

According to the range, all the arrested are being interrogated.

Earlier in November last year, a gang fight between two groups at Gaurigaun, Baneshwor, had also resulted in the death of an individual.

Bikki Limbu had died during the fight after he sustained injuries when the member of another group attacked him with a khukuri, according to police. The reason behind the fight was said to be a dispute in relation to drug dealings.

According to a senior officer of the Metropolitan Police Office, Ranipokhari, the primary law enforcement agency for the Kathmandu Valley, the case of Pulchowk was not a gang fight.

“A fight between two gangs, which operate illegal activities, is a gang fight in which one of the gangs always holds the motive of harming the other gang members,” Deputy Inspector General of Police Shailesh Thapa Kshetri, chief of the Metropolitan Police Office, told the Post. “In the Pulchowk case, it does not look like they had the intention to kill each other. The death was accidental.”

According to the crime data for fiscal year 2017/18 of the Valley, on an average, there are four to five registered homicide cases every month in the Valley.
