CPN-M's Threats to Those Gearing Up for Elections

Kathmandu/October 5, CPN-M, splinter group of former rebels, led by Mohan Baidhya issued warnings against the candidates and the voters asking them to refraining from participation in the upcoming CA elections. CPN-M is calling for boycott of the elections. In Achham, the group dispatched letters to the candidates of the district on October 5 asking them to withdraw their candidacy. Signed by CPN-M secretary, Dev Gurung, the letter calls for the withdrawal claiming the government was trying to impose election on the people. The letter further says, “The 33-parties front had been flexible and forwarded the four-point-demand in order to build national consensus and conduct the CA election but the leaders of four political parties rejected it and decidedly to go ahead for the elections. So, the candidates are requested to withdraw their candidacy to support the campaign for national consensus”. Similarly, in Dhankuta, CPN-M affiliated ANNISU-R and Magar National Liberation Front (MNLF) issued separate statements on October 5 urging the people not to cast ballot in the CA election. Both statements claimed that the upcoming elections were against national interest and also threatened that anyone who goes to the booth to cast votes, would have his leg broken. They claimed that the election was sanctioned by the foreign powers using the Nepal Army. Along with CPN-M, other groups that are opposing elections including CPN-United, Manch Affiliated Sanghiya Limbuwan Rajya Parishad are distributing pamphlets in the district calling for boycott of the elections.
