Police said three persons have been arrested for their alleged involvement in burying an infant alive at Devghat, in Chitwan, on Sunday.

The news came to fore after locals spotted movement in the child when a group of people including the infant’s father were preparing to bury the baby alive in the vicinity of Devghat area today.

Subsequently, police rescued the newborn child and sent it to Chitwan Medical College for treatment and arrested the infant’s father Raju Khanal of Bharatpur Metropolis-25, Sita Shrestha Bhandari of Bharatpur-27 and Juna Pandit of Bharatpur-18 for their alleged involvement in the incident.

Earlier, Raju Khanal’s wife had given birth to twins, weighing 1,200 grams and 800 grams respectively, on Friday. However, one of them died and the other weighing less received life-support at Chitwan Medical College.

Later, Khanal asked the hospital administration to discharge his child so that he could take his baby to cost-friendly Bharatpur hospital. Instead of taking his baby to other health facilities, Khanal took his child to bury it at Devghat area, police said.

According to Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Ek Narayan Koirala at the District Police Office, Chitwan, police rescued the child and sent it Chitwan Medical College where the infant’s mother was admitted for treatment.

Likewise, police also extracted the other child, who had died earlier, for autopsy in suspicion of foul play, DSP Koirala shared.

Meanwhile, police are preparing to file a murder case against the suspects. They were presented before the Chitwan District Court today itself and remanded in custody for five days for further investigation.
