Workers' Agitation Closes Unilever Nepal

Unilever Nepal Ltd has been closed as workers unions staged agitation with several demands on February 5.

 

Workers said that they have closed the factory as the factory administration did not fulfill their six points of demands put forwarded for two months. Agitating workers said that they will halt all production until their demands are fulfilled.

 

Workers are staging agitation by fulfilling all necessary procedures mentioned in the Labor Act, a worker Jung Bahadur Biswokarma said, adding, "We are forced to stage the agitation as the management did not address our demands despite several rounds of talks were held."

 

Workers unions affiliated to UCPN-M and UML have joined the agitation. Workers six points of demands include salary increment, healthy housing, insurance, medical treatment expense and relief pack in the condition of death of any worker.

 

Twenty rounds of talks were held between the factory management and workers in the presence of representatives of Labor Office, however, no agreement was reached, the factory management informed.  

 

Established in Basamadi VDC some 18 years ago, Unilever Nepal Ltd has 180 staff and workers and it has been manufacturing shops, pastes and cosmetic items.
