Girl Traffickers Get 20 Years in Prison

District Court, Makawanpur has sentenced a couple to 20 years in prison and fined Rs 200,000 on January 6 convicting them of selling a teenage girl in India. The court also told each convict to pay Rs 100,000to the victim. District Judge Dipendra Adhikari made the decision on January 6 against Laxman Ghimire, 21, and his wife Sanu Maya Syangtan Ghimire, 19, of Harnamadi VDC-6 for selling off a 16-year-old girl in Punjab, India in the pretext of running a shop in Chitwan district. The girl, hailing from Sukaura VDC-7 had run away from home to join the couple on August 25, 2012. The girl was kept in Chitwan for two days and then taken to Itahari where she was handed over to the pimps of India brothel, for Rs 50,000. The pimps, Ratna Bahadur Rai and Sabita Rai of Ilam, who took her to the brothel for Rs 100,000, remain at large. The Ghimire couple was arrested in Nepalgunj on November 11, 2012. The girl has managed to come home on July 10, 2013.
