Ex-Kamlari freed after 15 years

Banke, purva kamlari 15 barsha pachi mukt. The Freed Kamlari Development Forum with the help of police has rescued Sunita Chaudhary, a Kamlari (indentured girl child labourer) in the district. Sunita, a permanent resident of Naubasta VDC-6, spent 15 years at the house of Ishwori Bhandari in Nepalgunj-12 as Kamlari before she was freed. Sunita was five when her mother Asturiya forced her to work as a Kamlari . “I was deprived of my rights as a child. I was forced to work, but never got proper meals,” she recalled after being rescued. She said she was never paid salaries for her work. She, however, said she was allowed to go to school and attended classes upto tenth grade. Sunita said her former landlord did not even support her for the treatment of her mother, who died 15 days ago. Sunita’s father Shiva Prasad is supporting his family by tilling others’ land. Fakala Chaudhary, programme coordinator of the Friends of Needy Children, said arrangement will be made for Sunita to continue her studies. Sunita said that she could not pass the School Leaving Certificate examination as she could not study while she was working as a Kamlari .She said that she wants to do something for herself after she is educated.
