Woman Succumbs to Burn Injuries

Najarana Khatun, 22, of Rajbiraj Municipality-7 has succumbed to burn injuries while undergoing treatment at BP Koirala Institute of Health Sciences (BPKIHS) in Dharan on March 8. The victim who was burnt alive at around 2 pm on March 8 died at around 11 pm. 7-months pregnant, the woman was taken to BPKIHS after her treatment was not possible in Zonal Hospital in Rajbiraj. 80 percent of her body parts was burnt in the incident. Spokesperson of District Police Office Saptari DSP Raj Kumar Baidwar informed that post-mortem of the deceased was carried out in the BPKIHS on March 9. Police arrested the deceased's mother-in-law Bano Khatun, 44, and sister-in-law Nurjaha Khatun, 20, from the incident site on March 8 on charge of trying to kill her by setting her ablaze. Husband of the deceased had gone abroad for employment some days ago. She has a daughter. Meanwhile, various rights organizations in the district have demanded strong action against those involved in the incident. Issuing a joint press statement on March 9, Network against Violence against Women Saptari, HUPEC, Single Women's Group, Paralegal Committee, among other organizations condemned the incident.
