Elderly Woman Beaten Up On Charge of Being Witch

Parsa/March 12 Chhatiya Devi Malah, 60, of Ekdarwa in Lakhanpur VDC-9 has been badly beaten by her neighbors on March 11 night on charge of being a witch. Wife of Jogindra Sahani and mother of five sons, the victim was accused of causing the death of the six-month-old son of local Binay Sahani by casting spell. The infant had died two months ago. Injured Chhathiya Devi has been referred to National Medical College Teaching Hospital, Birgunj. Prime accused including Binay Sahani and Ajay Sahani remain at large after the incident. However, the police have managed to arrest two accused including Binay’s paternal uncle Netra Sahani and relative Sudama Sahani. Both have been kept at Pokhariya Area Police Office, Inspector Nabin Karki informed. He added that the incident was prompted by a family dispute. An amendment of Country Code on 2008 has prohibited leveling charge of witch at someone and the convict can be sentenced to prison from three months to two years and fined Rs 5,000 to 24,000 or both.
