Kathmandu/February 17

Participants of a program have called for the immediate formation of Truth and Reconciliation (TRC) and Commission on Disappearance.

Speaking at a program organized on the occasion to mark the eighth death anniversary of Maina Sunuwar, victims demanded the formation of such commissions.

INSEC chairperson Subodh Raj Pyakurel was of the view that justice could not be expected from the political parties and the leaders who have given continuity to killings and violence. He said that the present government was intended towards giving relief and tiring out the victims instead of providing them justice.

Saying that the Constituent Assembly (CA) chairperson had not suspended the murder convicted Maoist lawmaker Bal Krishna Dhungel, Pyakurel expressed his concern. He further said that justice could not be felt in the country as the government was bent on withdrawing the charges against those convicted of murder.

CA member Minendra Rijal said that the UCPN-M had not deserted violence. He added that the Maoist magazine "Lalrakhyak" had labeled INSEC chairperson Pyakurel, Kanak Mani Dixit and Kul Chandra Guatam who advocate for human rights as "people's enemy". He further said that PM Baburam Bhattarai would be responsible if the civil society leaders came under attack in future.

Maoists CA member Ek Raj Bhandari said that his party was making efforts for the formation of TRC and Commission on Disappearance. Saying that the true details of the incidents of armed conflict should come out, he said that the victims would feel justice if actions are taken against criminals.

INSEC, Advocacy Forum, Amnesty International, COCAP had jointly organized the program.
