Man behind series of robberies arrested

KATHMANDU: Metropolitan Police Crime Division has finally arrested Tej Bahadur Thapa Magar aka Saroj, an alleged serial robber, from an undisclosed location of Kathmandu. Magar, who figured in the ‘most wanted’ list, was nabbed yesterday. He is believed to be the mastermind behind major property crimes in Kathmandu. According to the MPCD, a rigorous search operation was carried out after his involvement was suspected in at least one dozen incidents of armed robbery in Kathmandu in 2007 and 2008. Magar and his associates, brandishing firearms, khukuris and iron rods, used to raid their targets at night or during the wee hours, and overpower family members at gunpoint before fleeing with cash, jewellery, electronic items and other valuables. “Records show that Magar had robbed cash and valuables worth around 10 million rupees within a period of two years. We have received many complaints of property crimes involving Magar and his gang,” an official at the MPCD said. As per the complaints filed against him, he was involved in robberies in the houses of Rita Shah (Baneshwor), Babu Kaji Karki (Baneshwor), Katak Bahadur Gurung (Gongabu), Archana Gautam (Samakhusi), Rabi Prasad Kasaju (Lainchaur), Joni Lama (Khadga Bhadrakali), Prem Prasad Gelal (Saraswoti Nagar), Yog Nath Paudel (Bishnu Budhanilkantha), Pravin Adhikari (Mandikhatar) and Pramod Prasad Chaudhary (Kuleshwor) and in the rented room of Mohammad Anzam, a Pakistani citizen, (Bansbari) and Kankeshwori Temple (Yatkha Tole).
