At Least 160 Legal Eagles Arrested, Released

At least 160 legal professionals, who were staging demonstrations to exert pressure for timely conclusion of peace process and constitution, have been arrested on February 24. They were released later today.

 

INSEC Kathmandu representative, Raju Paswan reported that police had arrested them while they were staging a peaceful demonstration in front of Nepal Bar Association (NBA) office at Singha Durbar in the capital.

 

"We were arrested while we were staging peaceful demonstrations demanding for conclusion of peace process and constitution drafting in time as per pre-scheduled program, " advocate and INSEC executive committee member, Tikaram Bhattarai said.

 

75 legal professionals including Tikaram Bhattarai, Sher Bahadur KC, Bijay Mishra, Sitaram Tiwari, Bhusan Ghimire, Bheshraj Panta, Santosh Rana Magar, Tej Narayan Chaudhari, Raj Kishor Yadav, Debendra Shrestha, Prem Singh Dhami, Ram Pukar Mahato, Laxmi Niraula, Lila Mani Paudel, Bishnu Prasad Bhandari, Jhalak Sharma among others were detained at Metropolitan Police Range Singha Durbar.

 

Similarly, 85 legal professionals including NBA chairperson Prem Bahadur Khadka were detained at Metropolitan Police Range in New Baneshwor.

 

Legal professionals had also staged demonstrations carrying placards in Sankhuwasabha and Rolpa districts today. They were wearing their black coats wrong side up as a symbol of protest, INSEC district representatives reported.
