Bigamist Gets 18-month Sentence

Makwanpur/ May 19 The district court of Makwanpur has slapped 18-month imprisonment and penalty of 15,000 rupees to Muktinath Uprety,40, of Bajrabarahi VDC-3, convicting him of polygamy on May 18. A bench of district judge Dipendra Adhikari issued the verdict. The accused married Jyoti Ghalan, 23, despite already having a wife at home. He was arrested on February 23 on charge of polygamy based on the complaint lodged by his first wife Sabitri Uprety. He was remanded in custody by the court order on March 27 and Jyoti was released on bail amount of Rs 30,000. Ghalan, however got a clean chit from the court. In an another incident, the district court of Makwanpur remanded Subash Darai, 21, of Bharatpur Municipality-13 in custody on May 18 on charge of attempting to rape a 14-year-old girl on April 26. A single bench of district judge Basudev Paudel gave the verdict against the accused.
