Convicted Man Continuing as Government Employee

Okhaldhunga/June 16 Lal Bahadur Bhujel of Bhadaure VDC-2, who was sent to three years in prison on charge of being involved in the killing of UML leader Chhabilal Karki, has been found working in government service. Bhujel was convicted by the District Court on February 6 of being an accomplice in Karki’s killing. He is currently working as the head at Additional Post Office, Bhadaure. He was remanded in jail for six months but was released on general date in February 2011 by the Rajbiraj Appellate Court. The Appellate Court has not quashed the District Court sentence while police are yet to arrest Bhujel to send him to jail. Local Shankar Katwal said that Bhujel was suspended during his time on remand but resumed work since his release on date. Post Office’s senior staff Durga Bahadur Khadka said that he had sought clarification from Bhujel after the victim’s family filed a complaint about his continuation of the service at government office despite being convicted and sentenced to jail. Khadka said that he would take necessary action after going through Bhujel’s response. Another accomplice in the case, Dil Bahadur Sarki is also walking free. Cases of other seven accused of the UML leader’s killing including UCPN-M cadres, Baburam Subedi alias Bidur, Deepak Katwal and Tara CK have been adjourned saying they all are absconding. When questioned, Inspector Bhagirath Regmi of District Police Office said that both Bhujel and Sarki were registered as absconding adding that the police were searching for them. Human rights activists have commented Bhujel case as being an extreme example of impunity in the country. NBA member Guru Bahadur Basnet said the situation came because of weak police administration. Wife of the deceased, Shakuntala Karki has demanded action against the convict while condemning that the convict was able to continue the government job.
