KATHMANDU: Police have beefed up security in the capital city, particularly in Kathmandu Constituency No 2, in view of the Constituent Assembly by-election being held tomorrow. Police are all geared up to fight social crime and deal with other law and order problems in the capital during election time. Officials say they are ready to provide security at polling stations and also to candidates. According to Metropolitan Police Commissioner’s Office, 1,250 security personnel, including plainclothes cops, have been deployed for poll security in Kathmandu-2. Of them, 591 will be stationed in the 90 centres of 39 polling stations of the constituency. Reserve police teams have been stationed at Koteshwor, Boudha and MPCO for the City area and similar teams have been formed in village areas. “The security workforce along with election officials and election materials have reached the polling stations,” informed MPCO spokesperson SSP Hemanta Pal. “It is not so hard to provide security for a single constituency. This time, the security workforce will be under the command of inspectors in each polling station and senior police officials will be there when required.” In the past, ASIs or SIs would command polling stations in the general elections. Thirty-three vehicles — 23 form Nepal Police and 10 rented vehicles provided by District Administration Office — will transport ballot boxes. “Though, we have felt relatively less security threat this time, security challenges during election remains the same. Measures have been put in place keeping in mind that criminal elements can take advantage of the situation.” SSP Pal said. Meanwhile, Kathmandu DAO has banned production, transport and sale of alcohol in Kathmandu-2 from June 20 to 22. The local administration has also barred movement of vehicles in the constituency from 7:00 am to 7:00 pm on polling day.
