Indra Bahadur Thapa Magar, the headmaster of Bhumi Basic School in Madi Rural Municipality-6, of Kaski, was arrested on the charge of holding seven students hostage for the past two years to save his job. The incident became public after road construction workers saw Principal Magar beating the student and reported the incident to the rural municipality office on February 26. Magar hit the head of Dipesh Rai, a student in class 2, with a stone who was trying to escape from the school. Meanwhile, another female student was bitten by a dog while trying to escape.
According to the district chairperson, Magar had brought 7 students, 4 male, and 3 female, between the ages of 4 and 12 from Lamjung, Tanahun, and other districts and made them work in his house and farm without proper food and clothing. He further added that few other organizations assisted Magar by making his house look like an orphanage. The students were rescued by the rural municipality, police, and non-governmental organizations and brought to Pokhara.
According to the government's policy of merging schools that have few students, it was decided to merge Bhumi school with nearby Maharudra Higher Secondary School. Magar with the fear of this merger brought the students from other places to save his post of headmaster.
