Province 1, Jhapa, Birtamod
Locals alleged that the Birtamod Municipality has manipulated the waste management and health insurance contract process in the municipal hospital. They have been protesting at the Birtamod Municipal Office for three days alleging irregularities in the contract process of the garbage and health insurance program at the Municipal Hospital under construction in Birtamod-3.
They have demanded the cancellation of both the contracts and warned to intensify the protests if the demands are not met. The locals allege that the contract was secretly signed during the lockdown without informing the locals, even the ward offices of the city were unaware of the contract process and no public notice was issued.
Kapil Neupane, a local, said that the contract was awarded to a private company in Kathmandu for economic activities even though the municipality was able to manage the waste on its own. The municipality has signed a three-year agreement with the formless sanitation service provider of Kathmandu for waste management in the last week of May.
Mayor Dhruv Kumar Siwakoti has claimed that both contracts are done in a systematic manner. He accused the youths of protesting at the instigation of the competitors.
