Bagmati, Lalitpur, Lalitpur

Locals of Lalitpur are agitated after the Lalitpur Municipal Corporation started the process of constructing an electric crematorium in the residential area. Locals have protested saying that the metropolis is going to build a crematorium in the residential area by purchasing private land in Manido of Shankhamool in Ward No. 11without consulting them. The metropolis had invited tenders for the construction of an electric crematorium in the residential area on October 10. Locals are agitating by forming a struggle committee demanding the cancellation of the tender.

The metropolis, on the other hand, has claimed that there will be no such problem as it is an electric crematorium. Metropolitan Spokesperson Raju Maharjan said that a well-equipped electric crematorium is being constructed near the existing ghat at Shankhamool as it is the oldest ghat in Nepal. ‘Shankhamool has the oldest ghat in Nepal.

According to the locals, only the dead bodies of the locals are cremated at the existing "ghat". They are worried that there will be a shortage of space and an increase in pollution as electric crematoriums will be brought from all over the country for cremation. Member Maharjan informed that the locals are preparing to go for legal action against the move of the metropolis.
