RUKUM: A 10-year-old girl died and her brother sustained critical injuries when a landslide triggered by incessant downpour buried her house at Batasedanda, Syalpakha-1 of Rukum district on Thursday night. According to DSP Gautam Raj Kattel of the District Police Office, Rukum, the deceased has been identified as Kalpana Kalyal and injured as five-year-old Prakash Kalyal. Prakash is receiving treatment at a health post in Dhape. DSP Kattel informed that Bijaya Gharti (10) of Simchaur, Chunwang-8 who was missing after a landslide buried her yesterday was found dead on Friday morning. Meanwhile, vehicular movement in Khara of Rukum-Salyan road section along the Rapti Highway has come to a virtual standstill following a landslide triggered by torrential rainfall for the past three days. Earlier on Thursday, two persons were buried to death in a landslide at Chumbang-8 of the district. Similarly, two persons were buried to death in a landslide in Ranka-2 of Rolpa in the wee hours of Friday. Police identified the deceased as Lali Bhandari (45) and Karuna Oli (7). As the monsoon entered the active phase, floods and landslides have wreaked havoc across the country. A man has been missing after a river swept him away in Bajura. Likewise, flooding has submerged most of the villages of Bardiya. As many as 200 houses of Baganaha, Thakurdwara, Rajpur and Magauwa have been inundated from the incessant rainfall for the past three days. Torrential rainfall affects life in Far-West Normal life in the Far-West region has been adversely affected following a heavy rainfall since yesterday. Traffic movement has been obstructed due to landslides and floods in various parts of the district due to torrential rainfall. Most of the roads in Kailali, Dadeldhura, Doti, Achham and Bajura have been obstructed due to landslides. As a result of the landslides, hundreds of passengers have been marooned. Torrential rainfall over the past few days has increased water level in the Seti River. The rise in water level has unleashed terror among the locals residing in and around the Seti River area. Meanwhile, SP Bhoj Jung Shah of the Doti Police office has directed the police personnel to stay in high alert round-the-clock fearing a possible landslides and floods and to carry out rescue operation. According to the Far-Western Regional Police Office, no human casualties have been reported till Friday.
