Women leaders of different political parties staged a demonstration in Birgunj  on April 23, alleging that women's constitutional rights have been fraudulently snatched away in the upcoming local elections. The demonstrators claimed that the ruling coalition in the Birgunj Metropolitan City and the leadership of the CPN-UML have taken away the established practice of having one woman as candidate for the local level chief or deputy chief. The stated that women have not been nominated for any post in the local level election except for the reserved ward member post. The demonstrators chanted slogans against the exclusion of women from candidacy in local level election. 

"Men who give big speeches in forums for women's rights do not give a chance to housewives nor ensure 33% participation of women outside the home," demonstrators claimed. And the tendency to give women opportunities only when they are compelled must be resisted by all.
