Surkhet, Surkhet ma gayeko pahiro le tahasnahas.Bheri le gaun nai bagayo. Thirty-three-year-old Maiti BK of Tatapani VDC-6, Surkhet went visiting her parental home at Lumki of Kailali to join in the mourning for her uncle’s death, leaving her husband and three daughters at home on August 13. Though it was raining heavily on that day and her family had advised her not to go, she insisted and left her house without her family’s consent. Upon hearing that flood waters from the Bheri River had entered her village, she returned on August 15. The entire Galpha village had been swept away, including her house. She also found that her husband Dilli and daughters Kalpana, Gauri and Pooja had gone missing. “Why did fate leave me alone in the world. Now how can I live without them?” She lamented. Two months ago, Janak Tamata of Galpha village had left for employment in India. Thirteen members of his family, including his father, mother, wife, brothers, and two sons were killed in the flood. Man Prasad Regmi of the village was also working in India during the flood. None of his family members have alive. His father, 65-year-old Bed Prasad Regmi, however, was saved. He had run away to the forest soon after he heard about the flood. “Two daughters-in-law, four grand daughters and a son were swept away.” he said. The flood swept away 43 structures and 29 people are missing. “All the villagers have been badly affected as it happened at night,” said Ujir Singh BK, former Tatapani VDC Chairman. BK added that a most of the males were safe as they away seeking jobs.
