Cadres of Nepali Congress and CPN-UML clashed in Dhangadhimai municipality-8 of Siraha on May 19 after 17 ballots were found without the signature of the election officer during vote counting. Agitated cadres of Nepali Congress pelted stones at the tent where the votes were being counted and attacked the cadres of CPN-UML claiming that vote counting was rigged. Police fired tear gas to control the situation. Two vehicles were also damaged during the clash.
CPN-UML mayoral candidate Shiva Shankar Mahato maintained the lead from the beginning. The CPN-UML alleged that only 100 votes were left to be counted and that the Nepali Congress was trying to sabotage when they were about to lose. According to an employee of the Election Officer's Office, the counting of ballots was postponed due to a dispute over the discovery of unsigned ballot papers. But efforts are underway to resolve the dispute through an all-party meeting.
