A group of women staged a demonstration on January 28 in Birendranagar of Surkhet after the Microfinance institutions increased their interest rate on loan. The demonstrators alleged that due to the Microfinance institutions' increased interest rates, the women were forced to commit suicide. The demonstrators demanded the abolition of microfinance institutions. The victim, Khagisara Wik, alleged that organizations were extorting money from illiterate women by hiding their passbooks.
