2014-10-22

SMS Alert: Banke, Piditharulaai 60 din pachi rahat prapt. BANKE, OCT 22 - The flood victims who were erroneously excluded from the government list and deprived of relief have finally received the relief package that was due on Monday. After a two month wait, relief materials were distributed to 31 flood victims deprived of the relief on the occasion of the visit of flood-affected areas in Banke district by European Union (EU) Commissioner Andris Piebalgs and EU Ambassador to Nepal Rensje Teerink. The flood victims received the relief packages consisting of tent, ropes, buckets including other basic necessities. One of the flood victims, Sita Sunar, who had not made it to the initial list prepared by the government despite being a genuine flood victim and faced various difficulties was one among 31 victims entitled to relief materials on Monday. “After being unable to get the relief package distributed to flood victims even though our houses were ravaged by the floods, we used to feel like orphans. While the ones getting relief took shelter in tents provided as relief, we were compelled to find shelter under thatched roofs made out of hay,” Sunar complained. Although delayed, it feels good to receive the relief package, Sunar said. Another flood victim Kamala Chaudhary of Puraini opined that those who received immediate relief were encouraged to cope up with the tragedy, but the delayed relief had a totally different effect on the victims. “While those who received the relief package early were able to set up tents and take shelter in them, we were forced to live in flood ravaged houses for more than two months,” Chaudhary said. “Though late, we have received the relief package and this has indeed sent a positive message to those like us that someone out there is looking after us too, she said. According to officer Dolakh Bahadur Dangi of International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), Banke chapter, the relief was distributed according to the data collected by the local bodies. Meanwhile, some of the locals complained that even those whose houses suffered only minor damages got the relief package meant for those whose houses were destroyed.
