Locals, Relatives Picket Police Station Claiming Custody Death

Locals of Sijuwa VDC including the relatives of Madhu Tajpuriya, 57, of Sijuwa VDC-3 have gheraoed the Area Police Office on October 25 protesting his death in custody. Tajpuriya was kept in custody on October 24 on charge of creating disturbance under the influence of alcohol where he was found dead. The villagers and his relatives claim that he died due to the police beating. The protest also led to a clash where seven people including the policemen were injured. The situation calmed after the police and the villagers on the condition of second postmortem. Police had arrested Tajpuriya around 4.30 pm on October 24 after he disrupted a program organized by Om Shanti at Sijuwa Bazaar. Police said that he became unconscious in the custody a few hours later and was taken to Kosi Zonal Hospital adding he died while undergoing treatment at 8 pm. However, Area Police Office Sijuwa’s Inspector Baburam Pokharel claimed though the death of Tajpuriya was suspicious, he did not die of beating. He said that Tajpuriya fainted soon after arrest and died in the hospital. S
