Burnt women still living in terror

org SMS ALert: Nepalgunj, Women, who were burnt alive by their own family members in attempts to murder them in Banke district in the past seven months, are still living in terror, the National Women Commission (NWC) has said. A five-member team of the NWC under the leadership of NWC spokesperson Manu Humagain recently inspected the condition of the burn victims in the district and demanded that the government provide security to them while taking action against the guilty. The team made public the report amid a programme in Nepalgunj on Sunday. Rihana Shesh Dhapali of Laxmanpur-8, who was allegedly burnt alive by her own husband Farid Shesh on March 17 this year, is still a terrified lot as police are yet to arrest the perpetrator, the NWC said. Dhapali, 25, who was pregnant when she was set on fire, had reportedly refused to bring the dowry as demanded by her in-laws, leading to the incident. Likewise, Chanda Nau of Jayaspur-5, who was set on fire along with her three children by her in-laws following a heated altercation on March 20, is taking shelter in her parent’s house. One of Chanda’s child died of burn injuries during treatment while two other children, who are still with Chanda’s in-laws, are in grave danger with no one to look after them, Humagain said. The NWC has demanded that the government should take special initiatives to get Chanda’s children out of harm’s way, educate and look after them. “Police should leave no stone unturned to provide security to the burn victims,” Humagain said. The NWC spokesperson said that police have arrested the husband of Puja Devi Nau of Indrapur-9, who was reportedly burnt by her own in-laws two weeks ago. Similarly, the husband of Hem Kumari Dhobi, who was reportedly burnt alive by her in-laws, has also been arrested for the heinous crime. Puja is receiving treatment in a Kathmandu hospital, while Dhobi died of burn injuries during treatment. Police said cases have been filed against Puja’s husband Pawan and Dhobi’s husband Gaya Prasad. According to police data, seven women were burnt alive in Banke district in the past seven months alone. Burnt woman yet to be identified Meanwhile, the identity of a deceased woman, whose badly burned body was found at Laxmipur-2 in Rautahat five days ago, is yet to be ascertained, police said. The charred body of the 22-year-old woman was found at Katta village after locals informed the police about the charred remains of the unidentified woman. Police are yet to ascertain the identity of the victim and search for the culprits, but the effort has failed to bear any results so far.
