2014-11-04

Bajhang, balikalaai jabardasti vivah garne laai kaid. District Court has remanded a man to one year in prison for trying to force a 13-year-old girl of Dantola VDC-4 into marriage by bride kidnapping. District Court judge Ramesh Prasad Gyawali sent Dhan Bahadur Bohora, 28, of Rilu VDC-2 to jail for snatching the girl for marriage purpose on September 22 as she had gone to graze goats in a jungle near her village. Bohora was arrested under the rape attempt charge following a complaint by the girl on October 8. Inspector Kamal Bista of District Police Office said he was remanded after going through the evidence submitted to the court. Though the villagers had tried to settle the case in the village, the girl and her elder brother came to the district headquarters seeking justice. There were reports of such bride snatchings in the past too. The victims said they were offered Rs 100,000 by local political leaders and the villagers to agree for compromise. Along with Dantola, the VDCs of Rilu, Masta, Chaudhary, Maulali, Sainapsela, Lekgaon, Daulichaur, Sunikot, Bhairnath, Surma and Bungalchhetra, there exists the practice of men and boys snatching girls for marriage with or without the girls’ consent. Commenting on the case, Women Rights Forum’s Uma KC said that perpetrators of such cases should be charged under rape case and not under the public offence charge. Pra
