November 17, The National Human Rights Commission is set to investigate the abduction case of Gyan Bahadur Majhi after the victims lodged a complaint in NHRC. The rights body said that it started investigation and conducted on-site mission after the victims complained they were made to stay in jail for two months following a false complaint.
The victims said they were subjected to torture and compelled to admit the charge, said Lok Nath Ghimire sub-regional director of NHRC, Khotang. Police had arrested Chitra Bahadur Majhi, Kamal Majhi, Madan Majhi and Surendra Majhi of Papalu VDC-8 on charge of murder citing lack of evidences under abduction and act of disappearance charge for which the accused had to stay two months in jail.
It seems necessary to investigate the incident following the victim's complaint and on-site mission, said Prakash Wasti, member of NHRC. He further said that NHRC has taken this incident very seriously adding that it would be taken as a 'sample' since it is a rare incident. Wasti is in a monitoring mission to take stock of human rights situation of various district of eastern hilly region.
The district police office had arrested Chitra Bahadur Majhi, Kamal Majhi, Madan Majhi and Surendra Majhi of Papalu VDC-8 on February 11 based on an FIR lodged by Bhupal Majhi complaining that Gyan Bahadur Majhi was abducted and murdered by the accused. All the accused were remanded in custody since February 16 by the district court order and were later released on date on April 16 after Gyan Bahadur returned home on April 13.
