Respect Children’s Right to Participate in Decisions Affecting Them

2014-11-19

The UN Committee on the Rights of the Child has emphasized on the right of children to participate meaningfully in decisions affecting their lives and communities. A press statement issued by Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) on November 19 reminded that the Committee has repeatedly stressed that children need to be part of the solutions to the many problems the world faces and that is as true today as it was on 20 November 1989. 20 November 2015 marks the 25th anniversary of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child which was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly. The Committee expressed concerns that too many children still suffer violations of their rights and especially violence, exploitation, and neglect, discrimination, denial of health services, or a decent education. "Creating the future we want, the future that will shape the lives of children and their children, depends on how we act now, and for that children’s participation is as important as that of adults," the press statement said.
