Nine girls‚ women killed in a month: Report

Kathmandu, 1 mahina ma 9 balika/mahila ko hatya. KATHMANDU: Nine girls and women were killed in a month (mid-September to mid-October) said a media monitoring report prepared by Sancharika Samuha. A statement issued here today by Sancharika Samuha said that cases of violence against women were increasing. It said that a total of eight women and girls were killed last month and the number had increased. It further elaborated that there were 56 media coverages during the month related to murder of girls and women. Violence Against Women cases are segregated into 13 types such as rape, sexual harassment/torture, domestic violence, dowry-related violence, trafficking of persons, murder, polygamy, witchcraft accusation, violation of traditional, religious, economic, health and political rights of women, among others. It stated that newspapers had 106 coverage of 22 rapes committed in a month. Likewise, five cases of domestic violence received 42 media coverages. Six cases of human trafficking got 32 media coverages and there were 24 coverages of five cases of sexual harassment and 14 coverages of three cases of witchcraft accusation. The media have given four coverages of one case of dowry-related violence. A single case of violation of traditional and religious rights resulting in violence received 37 media coverages. There were 27 coverages of two cases of health rights violation. It said that in terms of placement, most of the news appeared in the inner pages of newspapers. “Only 19 news items were printed on the first page,” it said, adding, “The fifth page had the highest number of news coverage standing at 95, followed by third and fourth page with 62 and 57 coverages respectively” If further said that a total of 66 news items mentioned family members as perpetrators, 25 news items pointed at neighbours, 15 blamed the state, 36 items cited others as perpetrators while 57 news items did not identify the perpetrators as they were unknown.
