Girl ‘asked’ to wed rapist

BARDIYA, DEC 05 - A former Kamlari girl of Dhodhari-4 in Bardiya, who was gang-raped in an Indian village on Friday, is reported to have been facing pressure from Indian police to marry one of her rapists . The victim’s family reportedly said they were pressed to marry the 17-year-old victim with accused Raju Chaudhary to settle the case. Raju is among four Indian youths arrested in connection with the incident. A source said Indian police are under the pressure from Raju’s family to help withdraw the case. According to Phakla Tharu of the Nepal Youth Foundation, an NGO working for the welfare of the freed Kamlaris, the victim’s family said that the girl is mentally tortured to withdraw the case. He said the victim is under the care of Indian police at present. The girl, who was attending the Sita-Ram Bibaha festival in Bicchiya that borders Bardiya in Nepal, was allegedly abducted by Indian men and raped in a nearby forest.
