Accused in Caste Discrimination Acquitted

Siraha, District court of Siraha on December 7 has acquitted Sarada Lama, 24, of Chandro Udayapur VDC-6, Ashok Thapa, 25, Shiwa Lama, 24 and Bhusan Lama, 27. The accused were arrested and released on bail on charge of discriminating Dalits community of Chandroudayapur VDC-7 for touching well. A single bench of district court judge Binod Kumar Pokhrel had issued a verdict regarding the case, said sub-attorney Hem Chandra Regmi. They were released after the accused gave a statement that it was just a discussion, said Regmi. The victims had lodged a complaint at area police office of Marchiya on February 28 accusing non-Dalits of entering the house of Dalit and beating them on February 24 for touching water from the well at Chandrodaya VDC-7. Sumari Devi Sadaya, 40, Panchi Devi Sadaya, 35, Senawati Sadaya, 34, Jahari Sada, 28, Sanjeet Sada, 15 and Shyam Devi Sada, 28, were injured in the incident. They were attacked with batons, stones and homemade weapons. The injured underwent medical treatment at local hospital. The accused were arrested by the police on March 10, according to Inspector Hari Khatiwada of area police office, Mirchaiya. District court of Siraha had ordered to release the accused on bail amount of Rs 7,000 each on March 20.
