Eastern Regional Jail becoming a model

Itahari, Purbi chetriye karagar ek model ko rup ma chinidai. The Eastern Regional Jail, located at Ramdhuni Bhasi Municipality, the newly declared municipality in Sunsari district, has become more than a conventional prison, with the inmates getting an opportunity to become self reliant by acquiring training, knowledge and skills. As a result, change is being observed in the prisoners’ thinking and behaviour. Traditionally a centre to confine those involved in criminal activities, the jail is now being developed as a training centre. The jail has now been changed into a training facility where 90 per cent inmates, out of 1,500 prisoners, are busy in capacity building and income generating trainings. Established in 2009, previously the jail was not only very dirty for lack of toilets and other physical infrastructure, but was also well known for prison unrest and brawl. . It was also a junction for drug smugglers and drug abusers. However, now the facility has turned over a new leaf and developed into a rehabilitation centre, which can be model for other prison facilities in Nepal said Chief of the Internal Administration Tara Nepal. Different activities related to sports, education, music and income generating training have now been launched in the jail. Academician Ram Rajdhami, who arrived in the jail for a musical programme said the jail has proved that change can be initiated from a small place commending transformed prison that positively affected prisoner’s life there. Inmates, who were deprived of education, have now an opportunity to educate themselves after an adult literacy class was initiated inside the jail. They have been getting opportunity of free education up to Grade 12. Fourteen instructors are teaching in the jail currently. The inmates of the jail have also set up a musical band. Besides these programmes, different language classes including English, Japanese, Korean and Hebrew take place in the jail targeting inmates hoping for foreign employment. Tara Nepal said that the internal administration has been making maximum effort to produce capable human resource by providing the inmates with instructive trainings.
