Freezing cold threatens life of poor in Tarai

2014-12-22

Rautahat, Chiso ko karan le tarai ko jana jeevan ma kathanai. People belonging to Dalit Community in mid-Tarai are keeping themselves around fire to combat cold. Life has become really hard as cold wave has struck the region for last three weeks. Families from Chamar, Musahar, Dhangar, Dom and Dusadh communities in Parsa, Bara, Rautahat, Sarlahi and Mahottari district are left in lurch because of cold wave as local administration had turned blind eyes towards them. "Where do we bring woolen clothes from at the time when we are thinking about our day and night foods?" said Bigan Mali Dom of Gangapipara-4 in Rautahat district. "We are unable to work because of the freezing cold," he added, "Our homes are empty and there is no blanket or a piece of cloth to cover our body." The same fate follows Akalu Dhanakar and his community in Baghan-7 of Bara district. Dhankar, a father to eight daughters and four sons, complained of lack of support from local administrations. "They have not shown any concern on our situation," he said, "At least they could have distributed us some blankets and firewood." Bara Chief District Officer (CDO), Bal Krishna Panthi, however, said, "We are collecting data of cold-hit victims for now." "Once the data are collected, the District Natural Disaster Rescue Committee will start distributing relief materials to the victims," he added. Likewise, Rautahat CDO Madan Bhujel assured that 1,000 blankets have been arranged for the poor communities and the administration will distribute them soon.
