Flood victims feel humiliated by local authorities

2014-12-24

Dang, Isthaniye adhikari haru bata badi pidit haru ko apaman. They lost everything to the flooding in the first week of August this year. The government did not do anything for the hundreds of displaced families except for handing over few packages of food in the initial days. Without much of a support from the local administration, the people have been taking shelter in makeshift huts built in open spaces. While the flood victims accuse the administration of treating them in a humiliating manner, life for them is getting harder as temperature decreases. "The government should have worked out our resettlement. But it didn´t happen. We are getting sick and shivering in cold. We are offered Rs 5000 as relief, but have to suffer humiliation even to get that," said Sanchalal Chaudhari, who has been residing at Fulbari-6 of Dang district. "They ask us stupid questions before handing over the money?" Chaudhari fumed. According to Chaudhari, on Tuesday he was standing in the queue to receive the money. As he watched the way the victims like him were being treated by the staffs of the district administration office his heart sank. "They were asking the victims to catch their ears and do sit ups. Are they criminals? Are we getting punishment or relief?" he asked. "They said the punishment was for reaching late to get the money," said Chaudhari, who returned without collecting the relief amount. The administration had announced to distribute Rs 5000 to each family of the victims starting December 16. Even though the money was insignificant, the people who have been struggling for two square meals a day considered it a relief. "However, it is coming at the cost of serious humiliation," Chaudhari said. Another flood victim Kala Khatri made same accusations against the administration. She said that she had to return home empty handed even after reaching the district office. "They refused to give me the relief amount," she said.
