2015-01-07

Madhes, Parsa, Birgunj

Maisthan area in the bordering town of Birgunj became tense on Thursday afternoon after police rounded up CK Raut, coordinator of the Alliance for Independent Madhes (AIM). A clash erupted between supporters of Raut and police after he was detained at around 12:30 pm. Two security personnel and a journalist sustained injuries in the scuffle during which police fired two rounds of tear-gas shells. Police head constable Rajesh Kumar Ale, assistant sub-inspector Bir Bahadur Singh and a journalist Upendra Thakur of Kantipur Television were injured in the clash. The 'Save Dr. CK Raut Struggle Committee' was scheduled to hold a mass assembly at Maisthan today. Police held Raut as soon as he stepped out of his vehicle at the venue. Police resorted to retaliation after Raut’s supporters started pelting stones. As the situation became tense, police fired two shots of tear-gas shells to take the situation under control. SP Dibesh Lohani justified that they had to take Raut under control in view of threat to law and order situation as he was holding the programme without obtaining prior permission. He also informed that Raut was routed to his home district in Saptari as soon as he was detained and the organisers Binod Prasad Shroff of Kalaiya and Thakur Prasad Sagar of Bara have been taken into custody.
